A Journey Through Orrun
The Raven Scholar takes us to the stunning world of Orrun, where magic and ambition fuel a deadly competition every 24 years to find the next ruler. There are 7 competitors, each chosen from their animal based faction associated with a particular god. These gods are the Raven, Tiger, Monkey, Fox, Hound, Ox, and Dragon.
The story is told from the viewpoint of the majestic Raven god, who watches over Neema Kraa, a member of the Ravens. Neema grew up in poverty, is friendless, and lacks many essential social skills. Her dream is to become a respected scholar, and she is one of the most gifted Ravens. However, she learns that societal hierarchy is more important than talent. One day, she receives an opportunity that could propel her career forward, but it comes with the price of a guilty conscience. She chooses to bear the guilt and is eventually promoted to the position of the Emperor's High Scholar.
The night before the competition is to start, the Raven contender is murdered, and Neema is the one to find the body. The Emperor decides that Neema should investigate the murder. Not only that, Neema will take the place of the deceased contender and become the new Raven contender, despite not training for it.
The Stakes Are High
What sets The Raven Scholar apart from other new fantasy novels is its high stakes. The deadly competition adds a sense of urgency to the storyline. Each chapter heightens the tension, keeping me eager to see what happens next. As Neema traverses a perilous political landscape, she confronts complex issues of loyalty, betrayal, and morality.
Hodgson develops characters with unique ambitions and flaws, making them feel genuinely human. Many of them have to make difficult decisions. These moral dilemmas linger, reminding us that the quest for power often comes with a considerable price.
Rich Character Development
One highlight of The Raven Scholar is its careful character development. Neema is a captivating protagonist whose struggles resonate with many readers facing self-doubt, loneliness, and a desire to prove their worth. Her journey is marked by emotional and physical challenges, highlighting her growth and resilience. Unlike the other competitors, she lacks their training and must find alternative solutions to overcome obstacles. We witness Neema transform from a focused scholar into a person confronting tougher realities.
The supporting characters add layers of depth, each with their own voices and arcs. They have their own flaws, ambitions, and moral choices to make. They enrich the narrative, without overshadowing Neema. Through these characters, we get to explore themes of friendship, love, and rivalry that can shift dramatically based on the stakes.
A Dash of Romance
No fantasy tale is complete without a hint of romance. In The Raven Scholar, the romantic threads are seamlessly woven into the story without overshadowing the main plot. The romantic tension between Neema and Cain adds layers to their relationship and feels genuine and not forced. Neema's genuine interactions with Cain not only elevate the stakes for her personal journey but also challenge her beliefs and values. As she navigates her feelings for him, she is forced to confront the implications of both of their ambition and the potential consequences on her own path. As the competition intensifies, their relationship becomes more complex. Readers feel the weight of each choice Neema makes, wanting her to find happiness even amidst chaos.
Pacing That Keeps You on the Edge
Hodgson’s pacing in The Raven Scholar is exceptional. From the very first chapter, I was hooked. An unforeseen betrayal takes place, catching me off guard in a way I hadn't experienced since the red wedding in George R.R. Martin's A Storm of Swords. I had to immediately message my friend to share that something astonishing had happened in the book I was reading. I spent many late nights reading, eager to discover what would happen next. Each twist in the murder mystery pulled me deeper into a complex web of twists and turns. Just when I thought I knew where the story would go, Hodgson delivers another surprise.
Parting Thoughts
As I reached the last chapter of The Raven Scholar, I was filled with longing for what comes next. This is the first book in a trilogy, and if you’re like me, the wait for the second book will feel excruciating. The emotional weight of the story and the richness of its characters linger in my thoughts, making it hard to move on.
If you're in search of a new fantasy read that combines action, intrigue, humor, and strong female leads, look no further than The Raven Scholar. Whether you're a seasoned fan of the genre or just starting your journey into high fantasy, this book promises an unforgettable experience. With its detailed world and complex storytelling, it represents everything I love about fantasy literature. The second book will definitely be worth the wait.
