There are 7 competitors, each chosen from their animal based faction associated with a particular god. These gods are the Raven, Tiger, Monkey, Fox, Hound, Ox, and Dragon.

The story is told from the viewpoint of the majestic Raven god, who watches over Neema Kraa, a member of the Ravens. Neema grew up in poverty, is friendless, and lacks many essential social skills. Her dream is to become a respected scholar, and she is one of the most gifted Ravens. However, she learns that societal hierarchy is more important than talent. One day, she receives an opportunity that could propel her career forward, but it comes with the price of a guilty conscience. She chooses to bear the guilt and is eventually promoted to the position of the Emperor's High Scholar.

The night before the competition is to start, the Raven contender is murdered, and Neema is the one to find the body. The Emperor decides that Neema should investigate the murder. Not only that, Neema will take the place of the deceased contender and become the new Raven contender, despite not training for it.
